Try a Little Tenderness
[Writer/ Director/ Producer/ Editor]
'Try a Little Tenderness' is a film I wrote back in the summer of 2013, strangely enough before I started my film course at college. But it wasn't until three years later that I'd be able to put it into production. It's a film that follows a young man through love and heartbreak; a relatable topic for many people. The film explores the subject of how early relationships have a huge impact on peoples lives, and can define how someone may see love, relationships and companionship for the rest of their lives.
In the summer of 2016 I got in touch with some friends and local actors (Jack Heath, Rhianon Mone, & Ellie Littlechild) and filmed around the town, editing it together with Ciaran Henry once I was back at university. The overlaying soundtrack was created by Matt Paddock.

One of the challenges I had making this film was coming up with a title for it. Even during post production I was still trying to think of a name for this film. This was until one day I was sat in my room listening to Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness", and I realised that, on some level, that track name perfectly sums up the film in four words. After running it past my editor we agreed on the title.
Some of the shots and themes were inspired by other films I'm a fan of, such as Martin Scorsese's 'Taxi Driver' and Marc Webb's '(500) Days of Summer'.
I had a lot of fun creating this film, with a budget of next to nothing, a Nikon Coolpix L340 and a tripod as my only equipment, and a very small window of time for production. It feels great to finally have it made after waiting for three years to film it.
