Deanery Halls of Residence Advert
[Writer/ Director/ Producer/ Editor]
Locations scouting, shooting plans, hiring actors, directing an advertisement, and then editing it all together.
All within 24 hours! It was a tough job, but it's what I love to do. This project represented to me how far I could push myself physically, mentally and creatively to create as good a product as possible in such a short amount of time, and to prove to myself, my lecturers and my peers that I could direct my first short piece as a University student.

Now in my second term of University, my lecturer assigned us to create an advert for one of the student halls of residence. He split the class into several groups and gave us an individual job role. After being assigned as director I started working on how I wanted this advertisement to look, and the kind of message it was sending. I decided that I wanted the advert to depict a student moving in on his first day, looking sad and alone after leaving his old town behind. Shortly afterwards he makes a friend with one of his flatmates at Deanery Halls, and then a few more, until he feels settled and comfortable with where he lives. This shows that the feel of community and friendship is all around when you move into Deanery Student Halls.
It was easy enough to film as my DoP (Jacob) and I scouted around the area choosing what to film and how to film it as part of the pre-production. On top of this, I arranged with one of the Popular Music Production students at Solent for an original score to be made for this advert. She did an amazing job creating the song, and it fits perfectly with the visuals and tone of the video. To hear more of her work, you should check out her production company; Newitone Music.
In conclusion, I feel that my directional debut as a University student went very well. The video came out exactly how I had imagined it to, giving a clear message through use of narrative, the visuals and audio resulted as I had hoped, and the cast & crew did a great job in their roles.
