Nest
[Writer/ Director]
"Nest" stars Billy Reynolds and Cameron Carmichael as Rick and Jake; a father and son who have always been there for eachother since Jake's mother passed away two years ago. Only now, Jake is about to leave for university meaning that they'll have to get used to the idea of living away from eachother.
This was one of the most ambitious short films I had made so far, in terms of hiring actors, getting decorations and props, finding a soundtrack, and having to find funding, which I got through a GoFundMe page I had set up specifically for this film. I worked with Francesco Bagatti (Producer/ Sound), Ciaran Henry (Editor), and Kai Edwards (Director of Photography/ Camera Operator) whilst I directed. I also wrote the script that was described by my lecturer as "A beautiful script that surpasses expectations of many second year film students".
The two actors for the film did a great job, Cameron being a friend that I had worked with previously, and Billy being another great actor I had also worked with before, earlier in the year.
A lot of inspiration for the realist filmmaking, and scripting comes from films such as "This is England" and "Cemetery Junction", and touches on the subject of leaving home, and the effect that it might have on the people doing it, and the people around them.
Despite the realistic filmmaking throughout most of the film, we decided that the last scene should have more of an avant garde feel to it, which was achievable by taking out the dialogue and playing only music over the images. The body language and facial expressions of the actors say everything that needs to be said, and it pushes the emotions forward for the climax of the film.
A trailer was also made for this film, which was used when we needed to pitch it to our class and lecturers:

I also added a deleted scene that didn't make it to the final cut of the film due to duration restrictions, but felt I should make it public simply because the acting in this scene, to me, was one of the highlights to this film. It also makes adds to the story more, giving more depth to Rick's character:
I had fun making this film and worked with a great team of actors, and fellow filmmakers.
